Issa Rae had garnered audiences’ love and respect through her web series Awkward Black Girl and debut book of the same name, but would HBO allow her to keep things as authentic and black? After all, the network had never built a comedy around millennial black women. When Insecure first premiered, a lot of us didn’t know what to expect.
